Chapter Eight;
For the first time in years, Maycomb endures a real winter. There is even light snowfall, an event rare enough for school to be closed. Jem and Scout haul as much snow as they could from Miss Maudie’s yard to theirs. Since there isn't enough snow to make a real snowman, they build a small figure out of dirt and cover it with snow. They make it look like Mr. Avery. The figure looks so much like Mr. Avery that Atticus makes them hide it. That night, Atticus woke up Scout and help her put on her bathrobe and coat and goes outside with her and Jem. Miss Maudie’s house is on fire and the neighbors help her save her stuff, then the fire truck came in time to stop the fire from spreading to everyone elses homes, but Miss Maudie’s house burns to the ground. Then someone just puts a blanket on Scout's head. Then everyone discovers it was Boo. Then Miss Maudie talks about her house burning down and tells the children that she didn't really like it that much. :)

Chapter Nine;
Scout almost starts a fight at school with Cecil Jacobs, a classmate of hers, after Cecil says that “Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers.” Atticus defends Tom Robinson who is a black man that was accused of raping a white woman.
Then, at Christmastime, Uncle Jack, came to stay with Atticusm his brother for a week. Scout normally gets along with Uncle Jack, but when he came to Maycomb, she cursed in front of him. On Christmas Day, Atticus takes the children and his brother to Finch’s Landing. Scout thinks Francis is the most “boring” child she has ever met. Francis called Atticus a 'nigger lover' and then Scout cursed at him and beat him up. Francis tells Alexandra and Uncle Jack that Scout hit him, and Uncle Jack spanks Scout. After they return to Maycomb, Scout told Jack what Francis said and Jack was furious. Scout made him then promise not to tell Atticus. Jack promises. Later, Scout overhears Atticus telling Jack that Tom Robinson was innocent. :)
