Wes Santee was a very accomplished high school runner not only because he was a two time state champ but he also set high school records. He was looked at by schools all over the country but he chose Kansas State because at the time they were number one in the nation and he really like the coach there. That spring track season he was demolishing all his competion and he went to the AAU championships and went to Japan in the 1500 and the 5000. He did very well there especially for a youngster. In 1952 he qualified for the Olympics in the 5000 meter but they wouldn't let him run the 1500 because they didn't think that he was good enough to do both events. He ran an exibition race against all the 1500 meter qualifiers and beat them all with ease with a 3/4 mile time of 2:58.
