Just Drinkin' a Coke

I thought it was really interesting how Mr.Dolphas was really drinking Coke.He didn't care what people thought about him but he thought it was easier for people to think that he was taken by alcohol. So then there wouldn't be as much trouble and people wouldn't have been on his case.He told Jem and Scout and Dill because maybe they would understand him better and wouldn't judge him.I think if Mr.Dolphas didn't pretend to drink I bet people would shun him and his business might go down and also he might have gotten hurt by people who thought what he did was wrong.

I thought that it was very funny, too. Expecally because before the trail Scout had seen him and taught that he had filled up a coca-cola bottle with beer. But the truth was he really had it full of coke. And it was because he had to keep what people thought about him true or something like that.

I love that post! That is pretty awesome. Although I think it is funny how he was only drinking coke. I know that it would be scary to stand up for what you do, but I think that hiding behind a fake drunkeness is kind of cowardly.

I liked how Mr. Dolphus Raymond pretended that he was drunk all the time. It was kind of sad how the women before his wife then had killed her self. The people of Maycomb would be happier if he had a reason to be with a black women so he prenteded to be drunk all the time so they would have a "reason." I thought that was very smart of him, but also sad in away that they just can't accept that he likes them for who they are.

I didn't really understand why he had to pretend to be a drunk...if he was a good, sober man who happened to like the blacks he would be setting a better example for society. When he fakes his drunkeness, it sends the message that only drunks and other lower class citizens can be friends with blacks...Having mixed children is going to get people on your case, drunk or not, so I don't really think he should be pretending, instead he should be showing them that he's he rich as hell and he can still accept the blacks. People would shun wether he was drunk or not, so he might as well show the world that blacks and whites can be friends and stuff...

Actually, he didn"t tell Jem because Jem was to selfish to go with Dill when he became emotional. He was too hooked on the case.

I really enjoyed this part of the book. I would have liked to see the look on the kids faces when he told them it was all pretend! I bet their jaws dropped.
