Who was William Shakespeare?

I guess that I am not alone when I say that I really do not know who William Shakespeare is and what he did. I know that he was a play writer and also an actor from what we read in our English books. But why is he so important that we have to study him? So I googled his name and found a really cool website that has many things such as a time line of his life and also a really fun insult generator thing. My favorites are : Thou traitorous common-kissing filthy rogue! Thou ruttish urchin-snouted wrinkled-witch!And Thou base common-kissing wrinkled-witch! Those insults sound no thing like the insults we have today. I wish we could have silly little words like those instead of some of the words that are used in todays everyday life. I looked around some more and found an Insult dictionary.I also learned that when Shakespeare could not find a word to insult some one that he would simple make a word up! I found this to be funny because he would be the only one that knew exactly what the word ment unless he told some one.
